Times are challenging for the bulker segment: Rates and earnings remain low and cash flow is weak, while public pressure to reduce carbon footprints is increasing. It is not easy to replace ageing tonnage under these conditions.
Nevertheless, the Canadian owner Fednav commissioned its 34,500 dwt ice-class bulk carrier Federal Montreal, a laker designed to navigate the St Lawrence Seaway. Equipped with eco-friendly machinery that cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent compared to conventional designs, she is the company’s 50th DNV GL-classed ship ‒ a reason for both companies to celebrate many years of successful collaboration marked by mutual trust and excellent communication. Their joint work to explore innovative and digital technologies, such as hybrid power systems, continues.
