“I belong to a small country. A rocky promontory in the Mediterranean, it has nothing to distinguish it but the efforts of its people, the sea, and the light of the sun. It is a small country, but its tradition is immense and has been handed down through the centuries without interruption.”
I read the words of Giorgos Seferis and can’t stop feeling so lucky and proud for living in such a paradise. Our people , our sea , the light of the sun and our history can ensure that visiting Greece could be one of the most important experience in someone ‘s life. Rugged mountains, exotic, pristine beaches with crystal-clear waters, green valleys, quiet lakes and lush forests – Greece has it all. Eirher visiting the land of the Olympian gods or the jewels which decorate the Mediterranean: the Greek islands, Greece can guarantee an endless variety of things to do, its diversity covering all tastes and preferences.
Nowadays there is an other important reason that Greece has been recognized as the best holiday destination . The country has been less scarred by the coronavirus pandemic than some of its European neighbours after the government imposed a lockdown very early in its outbreak, a move that has been credited with keeping the number of deaths, intensive care unit beds and critically ill people at extremely low levels. Thus , Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that the country’s borders will be open to international tourism except for countries with poor epidemiological data. To make visitors and tourists feel safe when in Greece, Mitsotakis said they will face spot checking at the airport and have access to basic instructions and the location of the nearest health facility via an electronic application (mobile app). Greece has restarted regular ferry services to its islands, and cafes and restaurants are also back open for business as the country accelerates efforts to salvage its summer tourism season. Travel to the islands had been generally off-limits since a lockdown was imposed in late March to halt the spread of coronavirus, with only goods suppliers and permanent residents allowed access. Greek scientists are working on health requirements for visitors, the tourism minister says. “The basic principles behind the new rules are that social distancing will be required, and that more frequent and different kinds of cleaning procedures are to be followed.”
Tourism is a vital part of the Greek economy, directly contributing more than 10% of the country’s GDP. More than 34 million visitors travelled to Greece last year, spending 18.2 billion euros (£16.2 billion), according to government data. Therefore , whether young in age or at heart, the time of your life can be had in Greece. The beauty of Greece also lies in the fact that rural life has remained simple and authentic. Experience the country’s rich heritage and culture, enjoy the intimacy of secluded bays, or the cosmopolitan flair of the vibrant Island nightlife bearing in mind this year’s motto, as Tourism Minister Haris Theocharis states , that Greece is coronavirus-safe.
