The Greek Section of SNAME had their traditional pitta cutting for new year 2020 on January 22nd at Angelicoussis Group of Companies Auditorium. The festive event was combined with a panel discussion on “Energy Performance Monitoring”. The panel replaced the usual Diploma competition which was taking place the other years. In a move to emphasize and project more the remarkable work taking place by the NTUA students in their diploma research, we have decided to move the competition in the incoming SOME Conference on April 2 and 3 2020, at Evgenidion Auditorium.
The panel discussed why it is worthwhile to monitor performance, what can be improved and how, what is important, SCADA systems and big data analytics, the complexities associated with electronic engines, actual examples of sensor data management and interpretations. At the same time hot potato issues of the day like the impact of scrubbers and SCR were also presented by the panelists. The panel, moderated by Dr. John Kokarakis from Bureau Veritas, Chairman of the Greek Section, consisted of Michael Servos of Minerva Marine, Stavros Papageorgiou. Dr. Lefteris Dedes of Euronav and Nikos Bekiaris of Prisma Electronics. The topic is of great interest and all participants in the panel are active members of the Intertanko Working Group on Performance Monitoring which will convene next March in London.
The event closed with the festive pitta cutting and reception, which although had one lucky winner our wishes for luck and happiness, go to all members and non-members of SNAME with the invitation for the February meeting, the “Kummerman-Mac Gregor Night”.
